'It's nothing but greed' - Readers react as tourist tax in North East could be a step closer

The North East's mayor has hinted that the introduction of a new tourist tax for visitors to the region could be on the horizon. Kim McGuinness informed MPs this Tuesday of "positive conversations" currently underway regarding granting mayors the authority to implement such a levy. Chronicle Live readers have a split opinion on the plans.

During her election campaign, the Labour politician proposed a £1-per-night tax on hotel stays in the North East, with the revenue to be reinvested into other events and attractions aimed at enhancing the region's tourism sector.

Whilst cities like Manchester and Liverpool have already introduced similar charges, these have been implemented by bodies representing local hoteliers, as metro mayors in England do not currently possess the power to impose them unilaterally. Addressing the Business and Trade Select Committee in the House of Commons on Tuesday........
