Energy providers will be required to propose tariffs with low or no standing charges, as per plans revealed by Ofgem today. Standing charges, which cover the fixed costs of delivering gas and electricity to your home, are included in your energy bill regardless of how much energy you consume.

Currently, standing charges cost the average dual fuel household approximately £338 per year. Last year, Ofgem unveiled plans for more low or no standing charge tariffs and has now launched a consultation on how this would work.
