Garden warning issued as millions of homes face hosepipe bans

Households throughout the UK could be placed under water restrictions due to the unusually dry weather at the start of the year, marking one of the driest periods in decades. The Environment Agency has flagged a "medium" risk of drought conditions in England this summer if the skies don't open up.

Presently, there are no hosepipe bans; however, authorities have hinted that water companies might need to enforce certain measures, possibly including usage restrictions, over the coming months following an exceedingly parched spring onset - the driest in 61 years for some regions.

The current possibility of water scarcity is in stark contrast to the excessively wet conditions experienced in England from October 2023 to September 2024, which caused substantial flooding and agricultural disruptions.

Chris Weston, Thames Water's chief executive, alerted to potential limitations this summer, acknowledging increased efforts in drought planning. He affirmed the company's proactive steps, encouraging customers to save water.
