In Alberta, new rules are coming for e-scooters, e-bikes and other such vehicles.

Exactly how and when the Alberta government will roll out new rules is yet to be determined.

There are details still to be worked out and we’ll have to wait for answers to some questions.

There will also be a public education campaign rolled out across Alberta stressing the safe use of e-scooters, e-bikes and the like.

We are told what the Alberta government is proposing is a standard set of rules across the province, a minimum standard.

The point man for this effort is Devin Dreeshen, the Alberta government’s transportation boss and one very busy politician.

Let’s start with a personal micromobility device. We’re talking e-scooters.

Minimum operating age. 14. Insurance required. No.  Registration required. No.

Helmet required. Yes, if under 18.

Operating restrictions. They can operate on sidewalks and multi-use paths where permitted by bylaw. I believe in Edmonton e-scooters are not allowed on sidewalks.

Now we move to power bicycles. E-bikes. The government will define more........
