Braid: Poll shows Canada may have more friends than Trump in the U.S.

“Canadians are like hobbits. They’ll save the world for you.”

That was Matthew Winkler talking. He’s the former editor-in-chief of Bloomberg, the premier U.S. business news agency.

“Canadians are consistently underestimated,” he said in a recent Bloomberg video interview.

“(Prime Minister Mark) Carney has consistently been underestimated, certainly by (U.S. President Donald) Trump and his enablers, but he’s somebody who does the work. That’s sort of what Canada is about.”

Winkler went on in flattering detail about the country and the prime minister.

He says Canada is trampling both the U.S. and Europe in attracting investment.

Winkler reminds us that polls show most Americans still have a highly favourable view of Canadians, despite Trump’s insults, tariff attacks and threats to our sovereignty.

Specifically, 79 per cent of Americans view Canadians favourably, according to a new poll from the Angus Reid Institute.

Fifty-nine per cent oppose the latest round of tariffs on Canada.

Seventy-eight per cent say the U.S. should approach Canada as a friend or ally, not some invented menace or target for takeover.
