China vows to ‘fight till the end’ as Trump threatens steep tariff escalation
In a fiery escalation of the ongoing trade standoff between the world’s two largest economies, China has issued a stern warning to the United States, declaring its determination to “fight till the end” should Washington persist with its aggressive tariff strategy. This defiant stance follows US President Donald Trump’s threat to slap an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports-a move that risks plunging the global economy deeper into uncertainty.
On April 8, China’s Ministry of Commerce, responding directly to Trump’s latest remarks, accused the United States of engaging in “economic bullying” and warned that Beijing would not back down in the face of increasing provocation. “China will fight till the end if the US side is bent on going down the wrong path,” said a ministry spokesperson, as reported by the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The latest flare-up in trade tensions began when President Trump announced a new round of sweeping tariffs, including a hefty 34% duty on a broad range of Chinese imports. In response, China immediately countered with a reciprocal 34% tariff hike on American goods, maintaining its long-standing policy of proportional retaliation. Trump, doubling down on his hardline stance, warned that any form of retaliation by Beijing-or any other country-would result in “new and substantially higher tariffs.”
