US and Ukraine hold talks in Saudi Arabia amid ceasefire efforts

The United States and Ukraine held talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 23 to discuss a potential ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev. The meeting came as the White House sought to arrange indirect negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives, aiming to de-escalate hostilities and establish a structured diplomatic framework for a broader peace agreement.

According to reports, the discussions in Riyadh were attended by key officials, including Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. Umerov later described the meeting as “productive and focused,” highlighting that discussions touched on critical issues such as energy security and infrastructure protection. He reiterated Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s commitment to achieving what he described as “a just and lasting peace.”

The diplomatic engagement in Riyadh signals a potential shift in the dynamics of the ongoing conflict. The United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump’s administration, has been working behind the scenes to facilitate dialogue between the two warring nations.

Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, announced that technical negotiations between Russia and the US would commence in Saudi Arabia on March 24. These discussions are expected to lay the groundwork for a possible ceasefire agreement, including measures to halt attacks on energy infrastructure and critical assets.
