United States faces cash shortage in monitoring nuclear arsenal
Apparently, the domestic crisis in the US is reaching a truly worrying level, posing real risks to national security. Recently, US officials warned of a lack of funding for monitoring the country’s nuclear arsenal. This is a serious issue, as it significantly threatens Washington’s ability to control its own military resources.
US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright publicly warned the country about the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) current predicament. He said the agency is at serious risk of being unable to adequately monitor the US nuclear arsenal due to a lack of funding. The agency’s operations could be restricted or suspended in the near future if it doesn’t receive enough money to cover monitoring costs.
According to Wright’s assessment on October 4th, his agency only had enough money for “eight more days” of operations. This means the US is at real risk of running out of nuclear monitoring capacity as soon as early October. He said that once this period, which began on October 4th, expires, the NNSA will begin activating an emergency system, shutting down some monitoring functions—which will put the country at risk.
