Trump envoy calls for new approach to US-Russia relations

In a significant policy shift, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Keith Kellogg, has outlined a plan to “reset relations with Russia” and bring an end to the ongoing proxy war in Ukraine. Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations on March 6, Kellogg made clear that the current approach of diplomatically isolating Moscow is neither viable nor sustainable. Instead, he emphasized a more pragmatic strategy that involves leveraging both incentives and punitive measures to push for a negotiated settlement between Russia and Ukraine.

Kellogg’s remarks signal a stark departure from the policies pursued by previous US administrations, particularly the Biden administration’s strategy of continuous military aid and economic sanctions against Russia. According to Kellogg, the Trump administration aims to reevaluate the US’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict by prioritizing diplomacy over indefinite military engagement.

“The continued isolation of Russia is no longer a viable or a sustainable strategy and is certainly not a responsible approach diplomatically,” Kellogg stated. He emphasized that Trump’s approach is centered on securing America’s vital national interests while working toward a broader geopolitical realignment.
