Diamonds and deception inside Georgia’s call center ‘Scam Empire’
The world of online scams is often veiled in secrecy, with criminals hiding behind pseudonyms and forged identities, targeting unsuspecting victims for massive sums of money. However, a recent investigation into one such operation in Tbilisi, Georgia, has uncovered the shocking reality behind the lavish lives of call-center scammers who make millions by preying on people worldwide. The investigation, dubbed ‘Scam Empire,’ reveals how a group of young, multilingual, and highly skilled scammers operated from a call center in the heart of Georgia’s capital, systematically defrauding individuals from Canada to Europe. Their lavish displays of wealth, including luxury holidays, expensive cars, and extravagant weddings, would eventually become the key to their exposure.
At the center of this elaborate scam was A.K. Group, a telemarketing firm based in Tbilisi, Georgia. The company, seemingly unremarkable at first glance, was responsible for scamming over $35 million from more than 6,100 victims across the globe between May 2022 and February 2025. The scammers, who referred to themselves as “skameri” (Georgian for scammers), operated with military precision, using a combination of fake identities, forged documents, and emotional manipulation to extract as much money as possible from their victims.
The staff, mostly young university-educated individuals, were hired based on their ability to speak multiple languages, including English, Russian, and several European languages. Many of them were motivated by a desire to achieve financial success and upward mobility, but their moral compass was nowhere to be found. The company’s performance metrics were simple: sell fake investment opportunities to as many victims as possible and bring in as much money as possible, with top performers earning tens of thousands of dollars each month.
