Mario Canseco: Canadians back evolution, yet poll shows plenty want creationism taught in schools
Once a year, we ask Canadians about the origin and development of human beings on earth. In 2025, we continue to see more than three in five respondents (61 per cent, down three points since 2024) telling us that human beings “definitely” or “probably” evolved from less advanced life forms over millions of years. While this year’s result is slightly lower than it has been in the past few years, the number of “evolution endorsers” has never dropped below 57 per cent in 10 separate surveys.
A positive assessment of evolution encompasses majorities of Canadians whose descent is South Asian (72 per cent), East Asian (65 per cent), Indigenous (also 65 per cent) and European (62 per cent).
Most Canadians in three age groups also side with evolution, albeit with different levels of enthusiasm. While just over half of Canadians aged 55 and over (51 per cent) say human beings evolved and were not created, the proportions rise to 63 per cent among those aged 35-54 and to 69 per cent among those aged 18-34.
Fewer than one in four Canadians (23 per cent, up two points) affirm that God “definitely” or “probably” created human beings........
