Bryan Yu: Resilient B.C. bucking the national export slump
The Canadian economy remains mired in a tariff and trade-induced slowdown. While exports rose for a third straight month with a 0.9 per cent gain, levels were five per cent lower from a year ago amidst lower demand for Canadian goods, and signs of slowing economic conditions. Exports to the U.S. increased but remained low stunted. More Canadian firms are meeting CUSMA compliance, although U.S. inventory stockpiling prior to the tariffs has limited Canadian sales.
B.C. has shown resilience after the spring slump. Provincial data is unadjusted for seasonality but rose 4.2 per cent year-over-year to $4.57 billion, albeit slipping 1.5 per cent month-over-month. That said, our estimate for seasonal factors points to a solid monthly increase and signs of a bounce-back.
There were areas of strength, specifically with a 66.3 per cent (unadjusted) monthly increase........
