How employers can support workers’ health amid growing wildfire risks
As wildfires become more frequent across Canada, employers can help protect workers by ensuring they understand and can access the health benefits and supports already available to them, says Erin Crump, vice-president of market development at Sun Life Health.
Sun Life research found nearly 60 per cent of employees said climate change or severe weather has affected their physical health, while more than half said it has affected their mental health. These impacts are also increasingly showing up in the workplace through absenteeism, presenteeism and reduced productivity.
“Wildfires are helping employers recognize that climate-related health impacts are not just environmental concerns, they’re workplace health concerns.”
