How menstrual leave can support employee health, attraction and retention efforts

Employers are increasingly considering implementing menstrual leave for employees, a move that can support women’s health as well as attraction and retention efforts, says Alexandra Russell, associate vice-president of employee benefits consulting at Hub International.

Many employers are examining their leave policies through a lens of inclusivity, says Russell, encompassing the needs of people who menstruate as well as people with disabilities or chronic conditions.

“We’ve seen legislative moves over the last few years to make sick leave more accessible and available to employees, so I think that signals a bit of a shift in how everyone is thinking about employee health and wellness in general.”
