The United States can’t go on like this anymore

In just the past couple of weeks we have seen, among other items of evidence of national political dysfunction, the following:

• The third apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump's life, with the would-be assassin issuing a manifesto which did indeed read like Democratic Party and CNN talking points.

• The indictment of former FBI director and Trump nemesis James Comey for putting seashells together in sand in a fashion that allegedly encouraged violence against Trump. As The Washington Post put it in wry understatement, "This is not a serious indictment intended to secure a conviction. It's intended to satisfy a president who wants to see his opponents face the same kind of procedural legal misery that he did." Or, as the conservative-leaning National Review more bluntly noted, "this isn't a grand jury indicting a ham sandwich but a scrap of day-old bread."

• The state of Virginia, in the latest gerrymandering tit-for-tat, with half the state voting to disenfranchise the other half because they might vote the wrong way (Republican).

• Three prominent journalists praising shoplifting as a form of social justice in a New York Times podcast, thereby further undermining the paper's credibility and creating yet another leftist euphemism, "micro-looting."

• The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) threatening, again, to yank the licenses of ABC after Jimmy........
