Images of 5-year-old Liam, wearing a blue bunny hat as he and his father were detained by ICE agents on the way home from school in Minneapolis last January, tore at the hearts of our nation. They were flown to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas over 1,000 miles away.

In Chicago that same month, as an Ecuadorian man was driving with his 2-year-old daughter, an ICE agent smashed his window when he did not open the door fast enough. His daughter, cut by the broken glass, began crying hysterically. Both were flown to a Texas detention center, only to be returned a day later when a responsible judge intervened in the case of a mistaken arrest.

In Little Rock, as reported by local media, Victor Romo, who immigrated 25 years ago and has been going through legal steps since 2022 to gain his legal permanent residence (LPR), was arrested at what should have been his last immigration check-in to obtain his green card. Published photos show him with his young children in happier times.

Imagine the horror and grief the children suffered on learning that their father had been taken away from them without warning and to an unknown destination. According to news reports, his immigration officer told him that he was suspected of a crime in Chicago based on erroneous fingerprint information. The father was taken to an ICE facility. He was released three weeks later after posting bond, although the arrest was due to mistaken identity.
