High prices, high unemployment: Who is Trump's Golden Age for?
President Donald Trump promised Americans a new Golden Age. But eight months into his second term, grocery prices are rising, along with inflation and unemployment. Long-term unemployment has reached a post-pandemic high. Farmers are struggling mightily to find workers and cope with massive export losses caused by the president’s sweeping tariffs.
This is a weird-looking Golden Age.
While billionaires and wealthy folks are clicking along nicely, the rest of us have yet to see a lick of good economic news. As Axios reported recently: “Virtually all major grocery categories are now more expensive than they were a year ago, some substantially so.”
Ground beef prices are up 13% over last August, beef steaks are up more than 16%, apples are up 9.6% and coffee prices have jumped more than 20%.
Even egg prices – you know the thing that was a huge deal during the presidential election – are up almost 11% over last August.
