Trump doesn't care if his election lies are fueling violence

It's not exactly breaking news to note that President Donald Trump used an international stage two days ago to repeat one of his more frequent lies.

But a filing from the Department of Justice that same day about the man now accused of placing pipe bombs outside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee in Washington, DC, after Trump lost the 2020 election makes it clear how dangerous his lie can be.

Brian Cole Jr., the 30-year-old from Virginia who was arrested on Dec. 4, confessed that day that he was the person captured on surveillance video placing the bombs, which never exploded, according to a 23-page memorandum filed on Dec. 28 by the National Security Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington.

Cole, the memorandum says, told FBI agents he had gone to Washington on Jan. 5, 2021, the day the pipe bombs were planted, to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election in support of Trump, who lost to Joe Biden. Cole also told the agents "something just snapped" after he spent time studying claims about that election on YouTube and Reddit.
