Commentary: As federal funding shrinks, New York must invest in biomedical research

New Yorkers pride themselves on leading the nation in medicine, education and innovation. Yet today, with federal biomedical research funding shrinking, laboratories across New York are confronting layoffs, stalled projects and an exodus of early-career scientists.
In the face of this federal retreat, New York must act — and there is a bold solution ready to go: the creation of the Empire Biomedical Research Institute. This statewide initiative, already backed by a coalition of researchers and institutions, including NY Cures, proposes an initial $500 million investment followed by a sustained $6 billion commitment to fuel investigator-driven research, build translational innovation hubs, strengthen regional research........
