More than 7,000 combatants lost their lives in the three-day Battle of Gettysburg, which raged over the fields outside the Pennsylvania town July 1-3, 1863. Five months later, the site of what is viewed as the pivotal battle of the Civil War provided the stage where President Abraham Lincoln delivered a compact elegy that in many ways reshaped the nation.
