Editorial: No more kids in crates
Parents were outraged to learn this "time out" box was in a classroom at the St. Regis Mohawk elementary school in Akwasesne, N.Y.
If you think the construct shown in the picture above is in any way an appropriate place for a child — any child — you might want to read another piece of commentary, because you won’t find much common cause here.
The photo, taken by a former school board member and parent at a facility overseen by the Salmon River Central School District, shows one of three “timeout boxes” installed for the confinement of students with disabilities. The inside of the box is padded, though that does little to fight the sense that the thing might be more expected at a CIA black site in the aftermath of 9/11.
