As the U.S. Supreme Court grew increasingly conservative with the appointments of justices under President Donald J. Trump in his first term, New York leaders wisely moved to protect abortion rights. Opponents scoffed; Roe v. Wade, they assured everyone, was “the law of the land.”

The foresight of New York’s efforts is now all too apparent. A New Paltz physician stands criminally charged in Louisiana for providing abortion medication to a young woman in that state. Gov. Kathy Hochul says she will not sign an extradition order.

Good for her. And good for the governor and the Legislature for doing even more this past week to safeguard abortion rights in this state – and beyond.
