A journalist holds a blood-spattered camera that belonged to Palestinian photojournalist Mariam Dagga, who was killed in an Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza, on August 25, 2025.

Nearly 200 journalists have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas since it began close to two years ago, nearly all of them Palestinians. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, this is the deadliest conflict for members of the media since the press freedom nonprofit began compiling data in 1992.

The grim total went up by five earlier this week when Israeli forces shelled Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, then shelled it again roughly 10 minutes later as first responders and journalists rushed to the scene. (This kind of two-stage strike, designed to inflict damage on rescue personnel who rush to treat the initial casualties, is referred to as a “double tap.” Such attacks are considered a violation of international principles of warfare.) At least 20 people were killed in all.
