Editorial: Disinvesting in the future

The Glenmont Job Corps Center will close down after the U.S. Department of Labor ordered a "phased pause" in funding of nearly 100 facilities across the nation.

In the archives of the Times Union, a search for the term “Glenmont Job Corps” brings back a fairly unbroken inventory of success stories. Here’s what our editorial board ancestors wrote about the program in 1988, a little more than a decade after the facility launched: “Though many of the federal government’s more imaginative social programs have failed miserably, the Job Corps program — at least as it works at the Glenmont site — would appear to be worth its weight in gold.”

That editorial was written in response to the Glenmont program being recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of the top five most successful Job Corps facilities in the nation. The previous year, it had been in the top 20. “It deserves the community’s support,” the board noted.
