Editorial: Bethlehem chase was a dangerous gamble

If you have even a passing interest in public safety, take six minutes to watch the dashboard camera video of the Sept. 16 police chase in which an SUV carrying three individuals suspected of shoplifting flees from a Walmart parking lot and, with a Bethlehem police vehicle pursuing, barrels down Feura Bush Road during rush hour. Crossing the yellow line and blasting through intersections, the police unit and the SUV dodge other vehicles going in both directions.

It's harrowing footage, and leaves the viewer relieved and perhaps shocked that no one — police, motorist or pedestrian — was killed or injured either on the road or at Elm Avenue Park, where the SUV left the roadway. Witnesses described the fleeing vehicle coming dangerously close to young soccer players and shocked parents before its occupants bailed out and attempted to get........
