A few weeks ago, this editorial board assailed President Donald J. Trump’s desire to seek $230 million in “restitution” from the U.S. Department of Justice — an agency under his authority — for the alleged sins committed against him during the special counsel investigations that probed Russian interference in the 2016 elections and Mr. Trump’s own efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. We characterized the president’s plans as a daylight robbery of the U.S. Treasury.

It should not be surprising that Mr. Trump’s supporters in the U.S. Senate’s Republican majority appear to have studied the boss' example and decided the time was ripe to wet their own beaks with some of that tasty free money.
