Editorial: An Rx for hospital care

At last, the state Department of Health’s August report on staffing at Albany Medical Center Hospital is public — not through hospital leadership, mind you, but via the nurses union, which obtained the full report through a Freedom of Information Law request.
In the report, the state noted 480 violations of safe staffing standards over several months, reflecting workshifts in 26 hospital units and including 32 violations in neonatal intensive care. And the state has rejected two corrective plans that Albany Med has submitted because they were “not responsive to the requirements" of the law, according to the Health Department’s report.
