Editorial: An attack on health care

For all its flaws, the United States’ system of health care has improved dramatically in at least one respect in the past 15 years: The number of uninsured people plummeted from 46.5 million in 2010 to about 25 million in 2023.

But Republicans in the House of Representatives are poised to undo that progress.

They’re mounting an unprecedented attack on Medicaid, the health program for lower-income people that covers some 78 million Americans. If their current plans hold, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that as many as 9.8 million could end up uninsured.

That would wipe out nearly all the gains that have been made since 2014, when the Affordable Care Act — popularly known as Obamacare — began to fully take effect.
