Editorial: Alienating the world

The travel advisories are chilling: political unrest. Destabilized government institutions. Violent crime. Profiling and random detention during border checks.

These aren’t advisories issued by the United States for its citizens traveling abroad. They’re from a growing number of other nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Denmark, Finland and China, cautioning their citizens about the perils of traveling to the U.S.

In the split-screen realities this country seems to be living in these days, these advisories come as the Trump administration is increasingly trying to isolate America from the world and stifle speech within its borders, under the guise of protecting freedom and keeping us all safe.

Barely 150 days into his first term, President Donald Trump is going even further than he did with the Muslim ban of his first administration, expanding his restrictions from religious beliefs to what would-be visitors write and say and think.

Mr. Trump earlier this month proclaimed a travel ban and heightened restrictions for people from 19 countries, mainly in Africa and the Middle East. Now he’s threatening to impose it on 36 more nations.
