Editorial: A measure of hope for abuse victims

Before discussing the latest twist in the path to accountability for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, let’s recall some of the ways its leaders have for decades attempted to escape or delay it.
First and most shamefully, the region’s Catholic leaders for decades worked to cover up the sexual abuse of children by failing to alert law enforcement when credible evidence of such crimes came to their attention. In too many cases, abusive priests were quietly shuffled to new assignments in which the congregation was left ignorant of the risk to their children, thereby enabling new cycles of abuse.
