Is a firearm equipped with a “forced-reset trigger” a machine gun? Not according to current leadership at the U.S. Department of Justice, which earlier this month struck a settlement with companies including Rare Breed Triggers, a leading manufacturer of the device.

The settlement ended three years of efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives to reclassify the devices as effectively machine guns themselves, arguing that they allow for the firing of more than one bullet “with a single, continuous pull of the trigger.” The web is replete with footage showing how FRTs accelerate the number of rounds that can leave the barrel of an assault-style rifle.
