Commentary: Outpatient surgery center proposal would be a blow to Ellis Hospital — and the public good

In 2018, there was a proposal before the state Department of Health for an outpatient surgery center less than two miles from Ellis Hospital. Our community pushed back: The data didn’t support it, and the state’s own guidelines require that new facilities demonstrate a clear public need and avoid duplicating services. This proposal checked none of those boxes.
The project moved forward anyway. The rationale? Free-market competition would be better for the community.

That decision cost Ellis, Schenectady County’s only hospital, essential revenue — revenue we rely on to fund 24/7 emergency care, intensive care, maternity services, mental health care and more. It may have made business sense for those involved, but it didn’t make sense for the community.
Now, history is poised to repeat. A for-profit called Wellness Way ASC, LLC is seeking approval for yet another outpatient surgery center, this one........
