Commentary: Repealing the 100-foot rule will help address climate pollution in home construction

New Yorkers are staring down the barrel of two crises at once. Costs are soaring, with National Grid customers seeing their pocketbooks squeezed even more due to recently approved rate hikes. In addition, we’re feeling the devastating impacts of climate change, from extreme heat to stronger storms.
Though they may seem disconnected, the affordability and climate crises are linked, and climate action is essential to lowering costs. Policies that create a more efficient, climate-friendly and resilient future can enhance affordability for working families.

In June, the state Legislature set us on the path towards that future by targeting climate pollution from the buildings sector. Legislators in Albany passed a bill to repeal the 100-foot rule, an outdated mandate that requires gas utilities to expand the gas system instead of investing in more efficient, cheaper alternatives. It’s now up to Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the legislation without delay to protect New Yorkers from rising energy costs and keep her........
