Commentary: Medical Aid in Dying Act endangers people with disabilities

New York is at a crossroads with the Medical Aid in Dying Act. While supporters frame the bill as a compassionate measure to offer choice to those facing terminal illness, the truth is far more complicated and concerning. If enacted, this legislation would create serious risks for people with disabilities, older adults and other vulnerable New Yorkers. Gov. Kathy Hochul must veto this bill.

This legislation, though well-intentioned, contains dangerously broad language and inadequate safeguards. Mental health protections are minimal; a psychiatric evaluation is required only if the physician suspects the patient lacks capacity, a standard that is vague and subjective. If........
