Levy: A bellwether on Long Island

Quick: Name one person running now for your town council or county clerk — and no peeking at the neighbor’s yard sign that you’ve been ignoring.

If you don’t know, or don’t even plan to vote before the polls close Tuesday evening, you’re not alone: Elections for offices that most directly affect you — such as the school board that levies most of your property taxes, or the fire commissioners overseeing life-saving services — attract far fewer voters than the even-year races for president, governor, state Legislature and Congress that command lavish spending to snare your attention.

But there is one local contest in New York with implications far beyond the jurisdiction where it’s being held. And it’s not the one nabbing an outsized share of campaign contributions and media coverage featuring some guys named Cuomo and Mamdani.

The election most worth watching is for Nassau County executive, and pits Republican incumbent Bruce Blakeman against Democratic challenger Seth Koslow. Though it’s playing out 200 miles south of the Capital Region on........
