Commentary: Training more Latino physicians can improve New Yorkers' health

New York is home to one of the largest Latino populations in the country, with nearly 29% of the state’s residents identifying as Latino. Yet Latinos make up only about 5.2% of the physician workforce. This shortage of Latino doctors represents an equity issue that impacts the health of Latinos across the state. That’s why investing in Latino physicians is one of the most effective ways to improve population health and close persistent gaps in care.
According to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials’ 2020 census profile for New York, the state’s population grew by 4.2%, but the Latino population saw a greater increase of 15.5%, from 3.4 million to nearly 3.9 million between 2010 and 2020.
