Commentary: Get up to speed on Capital Region speed humps

You know the feeling: You’re driving along a local road, listening to your favorite podcast, when suddenly your head hits the ceiling as your car lurches under you. You reset your jawline and look back: Yep, you just encountered another one of those traffic-calming, alignment-rattling speed humps.

No question, the number of speed humps in the Capital Region has shot up in recent years. Are they really the best way to get local drivers to slow down? I sat down to chat with Roger Crullerbee, director of the completely fictitious Speed Hump Institute of the Capital Region, to find out.

On the way here I just drove through five straight speed humps. They just kept coming, every 60 feet.

Actually, every 40 feet. A year or two back, speed humps were 100 feet apart. But our studies showed that the 40-foot gap, the Speed Hump........
