Commentary: How to find what you aren’t looking for

As graduating seniors think about how to spend the summer months before heading off to college, I have some simple advice: Learn to be a seeker.
Our devices have gotten very good at helping us find what we are looking for. Forgot the name of a song? Hum a few bars and it comes up. Want to know who won the Super Bowl in 1986? Enter the question in a search bar, and up pops: Da Bears.

While all this search power is wonderful, it can give us the false impression that everything worth knowing can be found through search.
Even the process of applying to college has changed in this era of search. Students come to a search engine with a list of things they want from a college, and a list of schools that meet those demands appears. Sadly, some students will spend........
