Commentary: More than ever, college campuses need veterans’ voices

As we mark another Veterans Day and hail the contributions of generations of people who have served our country, it is also an important reminder for those of us in higher education that we owe today’s veterans the opportunity to realize their educational goals.
The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, including the Yellow Ribbon Program, continues to provide essential financial resources that help make higher education accessible to active-duty service members and veterans. According to the American Institutes for Research, over half of eligible enlisted military veterans used benefits from the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill to pay for their higher education between 2009 and 2019.

But we also know that veterans face other obstacles to pursuing degrees, from trying to balance work and education to challenges around housing and child care. For these and other reasons – including cost – © Times Union
