Commentary: Even in New York, not everyone can exercise their reproductive rights

It’s been three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion and sending shockwaves across the country. Since then, state after state has passed cruel bans, forcing people to travel long distances just to get basic care.
Here in New York, we like to think of ourselves as different — a safe place for anyone seeking an abortion. But we need to take a harder look at how true that really is.

New York has taken strong steps. It passed laws protecting providers and patients and welcomed people from out of state seeking care. Last year, voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 1, the Equal Rights Amendment, clearly signaling that New Yorkers want to protect abortion access.
But access is still not a reality for many, especially for communities like mine. If we’re going to call........
