The Times Union accepts unsolicited commentaries or op-eds and considers them for publication in the Perspective section. Here are our guidelines, along with the answers to some frequently asked questions.

We consider commentary submissions ranging in length from 325 to 600 words. We look for commentaries that advance the public’s understanding of a newsworthy topic, offering a fresh perspective or analysis or arguing for a particular policy outcome. Most successful commentaries give an overview of the issue, explain what’s at stake and state a clear position or a call to action. We do not accept commentaries that are structured as reactions to news stories or other commentaries; that’s a format we reserve for letters to the editor.
