Commentary: To truly protect abortion access, New York must invest in training

As abortion providers, we are committed to ensuring that patients receive the care they need and deserve. And that means ensuring that providers are able to obtain the necessary training.

This year alone, more than 2,000 doctors in obstetrics and gynecology residency programs will be denied abortion training at their institutions. Unfortunately, such training has never been a universal guarantee, even for ob-gyns. In New York, a state with some of the most abortion-protective laws in the nation, about a third of ob-gyn residency programs still do not provide robust access to abortion training. Nationally, with abortion bans and restrictions interrupting care across at least 22 states, roughly half of graduating ob-gyn physicians will now enter the workforce without the knowledge and skills to safely and competently provide abortion care.

Unfortunately, they are not alone. Primary care physicians and advanced-practice clinicians like midwives, nurse practitioners........
