Letters Nov. 21: Direct bus to airport; make parking cheaper downtown

The “missing middle” housing initiative has arrived in my neighbourhood.

A fourplex on a single-family lot is being proposed on my street. Locarno Lane is a narrow side street with a ditch on one side and not wide enough, at all points, for a car and an emergency vehicle to pass.

There is a petition going around to object to the project because of concerns about vehicles potentially parking on the road.

I went to Saanich Municipal Hall to have a look at the plans and see if I share the objections. I was told that the municipality could not show me the plans until the project was approved.

This is not standard procedure and is completely undemocratic. In my 50-plus years in the building industry, it has been a right, available to everyone, to view the plans of proposed developments.

I must have missed the part that explained we were voting for a dictatorship in the last provincial election.

Not all municipalities have rolled over for this dictatorial provincial government. West Vancouver has flatly refused and is taking the province to court.

Our local politicians don’t seem to have that much backbone. They’ll find out how the public feels about inappropriate development in next year’s municipal elections.

The schedule of routes 87 and 88 that serve the airport does not cover early morning and late evening flights. The first bus arrives at the airport at 6:31 a.m. or 9:32 a.m., depending on the day of the week, and the last bus departs the airport at 8:37 p.m. to 9:06 p.m., depending on the day of the week.

The priority should be ensuring there are buses to accommodate all airport workers and passengers.

Next, we should add an express route between the legislature and YYJ, with a few stops at major transit points (similar to route 70).

If the new route is not viable at quieter hours, then why not have dedicated express buses at peak hours and merge with routes 70, 71 or 72 at other times?

We could better serve the airport while not compromising speed to and from Swartz Bay, except during hours of low ridership.

My mother once had to walk 1.7 kilometres in the dark from the airport to East Saanich Road at McTavish Road to........
