Letters March 23: Canadian coffee; MSP premiums; B.C. rent control
I was recently onboard one of B.C. Ferries’ larger ships and thought I would purchase a coffee to take the edge off the cold as I stood on the outer deck watching the seagulls fly.
Imagine my surprise to find Starbucks Coffee — a decidedly U.S. company that sells U.S. roasted coffee — as the only choice available at the cafe.
Why isn’t B.C. Ferries selling B.C. roasted coffee? Surely, we have enough local roasters to satisfy their demands and send a very clear message to our American “friends” that times have changed under Donald Trump.

I can’t give someone a dollar if their cost of living is higher than mine.
Last year, my wife’s and my cost of living was $62 a day, including absolutely everything. Well, we know how to respect money.
We, honest taxpayers, cannot afford to support idlers, drug addicts, etc. Their choice of life is their choice. The cost of their lives, paid for by taxpayers, is three times greater than the cost of my wife’s and mine.
Years pass with these problems and unfortunately, there is no improvement — on the contrary, the problem is growing.
Sometimes I ask myself how rich CEOs are getting from charitable institutions, and this subject is very easy to check. At the end of the day, we should not make the rich richer with taxpayers’ money.

Why? Why can a single person in Washington sign executive orders and have the free world shaking in their collective boots?
Why is there no real opposition from any foreign leader? As Canadians, we have got to be more firm, and as former prime minister Stephen Harper stated, we may have to pay the price initially but we simply cannot abide by this dictator’s demands.
Why is the World Trade Organization not involved? Why?

December 2019 was the last bill for MSP premiums to be paid. The B.C. government, by making our lives more affordable, took a hit of roughly $800 million to the annual budget.
