Re: “Grocers going all in to weed out goods from U.S.,” March 18.

The article outlines what many of us have observed in our local grocery stores. Clearly Canadians are taking swift action in showing their displeasure with the imposed tariffs by buying food from anywhere except the States.

The article highlights produce but I would like to encourage shoppers to think about everything they buy and from where they buy.

It is simple to do a quick search to find out where things are made or produced and what stores. The big box stores especially are American.

If we are serious about making our protests through shopping, we need to target as much as we can and not just the already-struggling farmers. Money talks.

Buying many local products from local stores is the best strategy and better for our environment.

Sweet potatoes from Japan? Blueberries from Peru? Red carrots from China? Think of all the fossil fuels in the air for vegetables we can get from our local farms.

“Buy local” is a good mantra.

If there is one takeaway from the Donald Trump takeover of the U.S. that can serve us, it is this: Unite as a nation.

Get beyond provincial differences. Get beyond political differences that aren’t earth shattering. Look past the internal things that seem to separate us as Canadians.

This time is the time to unify as Canadians and make no bones about it.

Trump gained power by doing just that. Whatever means he used (blackmail? bribery? threats?), it worked for him. It can work for us if we just see it as a good thing.

Unify against a common enemy. Make friends with your other Canadians from sea to sea, by whatever means you have — emails, phone, letter, social media posts, whatever.

Talk to one another. Reach out, find consensus in this time of national crisis and come together. Unite. Be proud. Make noise.

It’s truly necessary.
