Letters Aug. 30: New chief not hired because of gender; speeding driver
A big thank you to the District of Saanich, the Saanich Legacy Foundation and the community groups involved in putting on the Music in the Park summer program.
This was my first year at the events and the two evenings when I went were well attended and offered great music.
It was delightful to see so many families enjoying a free evening out, a rare opportunity for many families, and the area for dancing was well used by people of every age and ability.
When so many news stories, and even letters to the paper, are filled with stories about what is wrong with the world, it was a joy to join others in celebrating being outdoors, experiencing music and community — heart lifting.

U.S. border policy is reaching disturbing levels. Consider:
• The Haskell library which serves Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec, transects the international boundary. Residents of both countries have crossed the line in the floor for years.
No more — Canadians are now required to use a formal border crossing to access the shared library.
• For decades, southern Alberta residents in the County of Warner have had the convenience of accessing a Montana road immediately adjacent and parallel to the border (it intersects many Alberta roads).
The county had an agreement with nearby Toole County, Montana, where they would supply the gravel and Warner would do the maintenance. No more. The County of Warner must build a replacement road within a few feet of the border to achieve the same convenience.
• Sailors, who recently crossed into U.S. waters near Pender Island were subject to substantive U.S. Coast Guard enforcement.
B.C. ferry captains may wish to reevaluate their Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route to avoid U.S. waters and Swiftsure organizers may also wish to reconsider plans for an annual yacht race which enters U.S. waters.
