Editorial: Crazy times at the B.C. legislature

It has been a crazy year thanks to the on-again, off-again tariff talk with the United States, and a crazy week with gas prices dropping and soaring again within a matter of hours.

But let’s not ignore what has been happening in the provincial legislature. It might not be possible to see common sense in this, but it’s worth a recap.

With fears about how the province might be hurt by the American tariffs and the Canadian response, Premier David Eby introduced Bill 7, the Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act.

The idea was simple. The bill, as unveiled three weeks ago, would grant emergency powers to the premier and his cabinet to allow them to act quickly in response to whatever problems might come our way.

The premier and his cabinet — which, let’s be honest, basically means the premier — would be able to override any previous legislation. Opposition members would not be allowed a say. Accountability, the basic principle of our parliamentary system, would be tossed out the window.
