A commentary by a Victoria resident.

An April 4 letter to the editor prompted the question: “What did Liberals ruin other than straws?” A detailed response would doubtless occupy much of this newspaper.

Let me start by reflecting on the prime responsibilities of a national government. I would list No. 1 as that quaint old phrase Defence of the Realm to which I would give all recent governments a failing grade.

Next is maintenance of internal law and order. We have a catch and release system where criminals are arrested, released to commit more crimes, re-arrested and released again and the cycle repeats.

We have had major criminal trials thrown out of court because it took too long for the case to appear in court. We have rampant antisemitism throughout........
