The Wall Street Journal’s report that the Pentagon is weighing a westward shift of Gulf based forces, with Israel named among possible new sites, has been read by some as the opening act of a wholesale relocation. It is nothing of the sort. What is being exercised is an option, not a decision, and the distinction matters more than the headlines suggest.

Naval Support Activity Bahrain absorbed roughly four hundred million dollars in direct damage during Iran’s retaliatory barrage following the February strikes, with command centres, barracks and water systems among the casualties. Across the wider campaign, more than eight thousand missiles and drones were launched at American positions, killing thirteen US servicemembers and wounding hundreds, though Bahrain itself recorded none. CENTCOM is right to point out that the base remained operational throughout. But the satellite imagery tells its own story: this was not a glancing blow. It was a demonstration that a base two hundred and forty kilometres from Iran’s coast is no longer a sanctuary, if it ever was.
