The Mystery and Meaning of Ritual

Without a doubt, the rite of the Red Heifer (Parah Adumah) is striking in its strangeness, both in its purpose and its preparation. It was intended to produce ashes that, when mixed with spring water, were sprinkled upon those who had come into contact with the dead to purify them ritually. Yet, paradoxically, all those who participated in its preparation were themselves rendered ritually impure. The unusual nature of this rite was recognized from the earliest times, and Jewish tradition has devoted considerable effort to understanding both the ritual itself and its underlying purpose.

One rabbinic anecdote is particularly striking. The sages relate a story about a non-Jew who questions Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai, the sage renowned for saving the Jewish world after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple, concerning the oddity of this rite:
